What didn't beat out it's predecessor though was the story which was too dark, too grim, and too gory. There was more action, more comedy, and non-stop thrills, the whole way through, which beat out Raiders of the Lost Ark. Actually set a few years earlier, Stephen Spielberg took everything that people loved in the original and doubled it. The Temple of Doom was quite different from Raiders of the Lost Ark. Indiana is turned to their evil plots at one point but Short, escaping from the slave laborers and freeing the other children, saves the day, which ultimately allows Indiana to save Willie just before she is burned to death.įrom there on in, it's a life and death struggle to survive, escaping from the wicked ruler intent on nothing more than getting his precious stones back and ripping out Indiana's heart.
Indiana and Willie's romance is interrupted by henchmen who want nothing more than to turn Indiana into a follower, Short into one of the hundreds of child slaves, and Willie into a sacrificial woman. The dark caverns in the temple contain sacrificial rooms where followers scream in glory as their master rips the heart from men and lowers them into a burning pit of fire. Though appearing civilized at first, the temple, and the Maharajah himself, turn out to be filled with evil. They soon stumble across a poor village with no children and the community's leader hires Indiana to retrieve the village's sacred stone which was stolen by their neighbors.
